What exactly does the acronym VLSI mean?
Q. I am going into engineering this year, and I am taking some courses that are tiltled with this acronym and was wondering what it means. Thanks!
Asked by Zachary I - Thu May 8 14:03:29 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Very Large Scale Integration. When the acronym was first used in the 1970s it refered to an integrated circuit (chip) with more than 10,000 transistors, but now it refers to a chip with more than 1 million and up to several million transistors, because a chip with 10,000 transistors is considered 'small'. .

Mnemonics are often verbal, something such as a very short poem or a special word used to help a person remember something, particularly lists. Mnemonics rely not only on repetition to remember facts, but also on associations between easy-to-remember constructs and lists of data, based on the principle that the humanistic mind much more easily remembers insignificant data attached to spatial, personal, or otherwise meaningful information than that occurring in meaningless sequences. The sequences must make sense though; if a random mnemonic is made up, it is not necessarily a memory aid. Do people freak out about HPV more because its acronym is similar to HIV?
Q. HPV causes genital warts and can lead to cancer in some cases, but it is not the same thing as HIV. I think some people who are ignorant of the diseases tend to subconsciously overreact to hearing the acronym HPV, confusing it with HIV. Don't you wish there was another acronym for HPV? I wasn't asking why people freak out about HPV, but if they have a stronger reaction to the acronym due to its similarity to HIV.

A. I suppose, but I think people freak out just because it's an std, and what they don't realise is that more than 50 percent of the people they encounter or work with or whatever probably have some sort of std. It's just stereotypical, I guess. There are several different types of HPV. Their are 2 main types one causes genital warts, and the other causes cervical cancer. If you have HPV, either type, it's extremely important to make regular appointments with an obgyn. But HPV is the common cold of stds, in fact it usually goes away within a few years... So it's not that bad really...

Can a registered company name that is an acronym be represented in a logo without periods?
Q. I'm designing a logo for a company that is afraid of breaking some sort of law if they take the periods out of their company name. The acronym forms a new word and I find it cumbersome to have 5 periods breaking up a word. In fact I can't think of any other companies that have acronyms use periods, like CNN, ABC, SAIC, USPS, etc. Did they have to register like that to be allowed to use their names without periods?
Asked by Ll B - Fri Oct 16 17:43:16 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If the acronym was registered with periods (doubtful), than it would have to be registered without the periods. to get all the benefits under intellectual property laws. However, most acronyms are published sans periods.
