What acronym do doctors use to remember the order in which they should place orders for patients?
Q. I believe doctors have a certain long acronym that they use to help them remember the order in which they place orders for patients, such as admission orders, diets, etc. This is for actually placing the orders, not for recording them. Physicians tend to have a mental checklist that they follow for going through the different types of orders and whether patients need an order from that type.

A. Very Large Scale Integration. When the acronym was first used in the 1970s it refered to an integrated circuit (chip) with more than 10,000 transistors, but now it refers to a chip with more than 1 million and up to several million transistors, because a chip with 10,000 transistors is considered 'small'. .

Some would say an acronym is a word which consists of the first letters of words in a phrase. For example, AIDS is an acronym for "Active Immune Deficiency Syndrome". Meanwhile, an abbreviation is a word which is just a shortened version of a longer word. For example, an abbreviation might be "defn" for definition. 2. Letters vs. Word This is the more complicated English teachery grammar difference. Some argue that an acronym can't be pronounced by its letters. For example, AIDS is an acronym because we call it "aydes" rather than "ay-eye-dee-ess". That means that FBI, since we pronounce it as… [cont.]
