What does the acronym COP really stand for? Is it a short for the Copper badge or is it Constable On Patrol?
Q. Policemen are called COPs. What does this acronym really stand for? Is COP a front clipping of Copper from which Badges were used to be made of, or does it come from first letters of "Constable On Patrol"?
Asked by Steve H - Sun Jul 11 11:29:25 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not an acronym. It's actually a "backronym" - an acronym invented to fit the word, rather than the origin of the word. "Cop" (for policeman) is a contraction of "copper". The accepted etymology is that this is some development from the verb "to cop" = to capture, catch, lay hold of, nab . (OED)
