From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society. The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns. In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How many civilians work for the military or agencies of the military? Q. For instance there is approximately 1.1 million US army soldiers. How many civilians are there that work for military agencies? What is the ration for civilians vs military (all military, not just army)? I know a sargeant that repairs tanks and he mentioned how he wants to work for the government or the army as a civilian repairing tanks and get paid much more. Are there many jobs like that, that exist? Did I misunderstand what he said? I am confused at to what the difference is between military tactics and military strategy. Can somebody please explain to me the difference? Asked by Kyle M - Mon Dec 22 15:31:21 2008 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. I believe that tactics are more specific, whereas strategy is the overall plan. Strategy consists of tactics. In the case of nuclear weapons, tactical nuclear weapons are for use against military targets. Strategic nuclear weapons are for countervalue targets (usually cities). Q. I am 17 and am trying to deide what I want to do for a military career. Green Berets, Rangers, Marine Recon, Navy Seals. I know they are all very skilled, but which is the considered to be the best of the best? Please tell me why you are qualified to answer this question. I just don't want some 12 year old answering. Asked by Steven G - Wed Dec 5 22:01:20 2007 - - 12 Answers - 1 Comments A. They each have different mission statements. Marine recon is just that; recon. They generally go out, scout, infiltrate and report back and directly fire. Seals are usually a quick reaction force. They land, rescue/recover and exit. Green Berets (SF) are longer term forces. Dropped behind lines, work with underground fighters, sabotage, etc. may be gone months. Like working with the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan early in the war. Ranger are basically elite army forces. Now these are very general and the jobs do overlap considerably as conditions mandate so none of this is carved in stone. Also Recon, Seals and SF personell often combine in team for various missions when required. Recon teams often have Navy Corpmen who may be… [cont.] Answered by tonypegel - Wed Dec 5 22:12:57 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "military" This page is for quotations related to the armed forces and military matters.
