Radar is an object detection system that uses electromagnetic waves to identify the range, altitude, direction, or speed of both moving and fixed objects such as aircraft, ships, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. The term RADAR was coined in 1941 as an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging. The term has since entered the English language as a standard word, radar, losing the capitalization. Radar was originally called RDF (Radio Direction Finder, now used as a totally different device) in the United Kingdom, in order to preserve the secrecy of its ranging capability.

A radar system has a transmitter that emits microwaves or radio waves. These waves are in phase when emitted, and when they come into contact with an object are scattered in all directions. The signal is thus partly reflected back and it has a slight change of wavelength (and thus frequency) if the target is moving. The receiver is usually, but not always, in the same location as the transmitter. Although the signal returned is usually very weak, the signal can be amplified through use of electronic techniques in the receiver and in the antenna configuration. This enables radar to detect objects at ranges where other emissions, such as sound or visible light, would be too weak to detect. Radar uses include meteorological detection of precipitation, measuring ocean surface waves, air traffic control, police detection of speeding traffic, determining the speed of baseballs and by the military.

What does it mean when the law says that radar detetors are prohibited?
Q. I have been doing some research and it says that Md doesnt have a law against radar detectors; however, they are prohibited in the state of MD. What exactly does that mean?

A. Would guess that it is was it is - they do not have a law against having radar detectors on the books, probably because it would be so hard to enforce by the state swooping in and confiscation all detectors which would be time consuming and an act of a " police state" type event. This would bring on the ACLU as well as the lobbyist in the electronic companies that manufacture, sell, license to sell etc...So the state took the "end round" safer game by just prohibiting them. Chances are when you take the amount of radar detectors from out of state travelers - etc. It would be nearly impossible to enforce the action. More than likely - the state has a newer version of the law hidden within some other bill, or law that has been passed in… [cont.]

How can I install a radar detector cord in the roof of a 2004 Acura TL?
Q. I am going to be purchasing a 2004 Acura TL, hopefully soon. I test drove one in which the previous owner had installed a radar detector cord through the roof, so that he could mount the detector next to the rearview mirror. I'm not purchasing that particular car. Should I do this installation myself? Or, where can I have it done? Any of you ever done this before? Thanks. Also, and other customizations that you would reccommend for this car?

How do i go about picking a radar detector?
Q. How do i find out what radar detector i need?
Asked by Matthew - Tue Jun 16 03:02:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Beltronics, Escort, and Valentine are the only brands worth buying. The only worthy radar detectors are the top of the line models. Expect to pay at least $330 and the price just goes up from there. I use a Beltronics RX65, close to the famed Escort Passport 8500 in terms of performance. I recommend one of these two. Or, if you wanna spend money, you can go for the newer models like the Beltronics STi Driver or the Passport 9500. If you want full protection, you will also need a laser jammer. Most cops use laser instead of radar and you won't know they're reading your speed until its too late. Laser Defender (now called Neutralaser), Laser Interceptor, and Antilaser are a few examples of brands to look for when shopping for… [cont.]
