Radar is an object-detection system that uses electromagnetic waves - specifically radio waves - to identify the range, altitude, direction, or speed of both moving and fixed objects such as aircraft, ships, spacecraft, mountain ranges, radio and TV towers, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. The radar dish, or antenna, transmits pulses of radio waves or microwaves which bounce off any object in their path. The object returns a tiny part of the wave's energy to a dish or antenna which is usually located at the same site as the transmitter. The term RADAR was coined in 1940 by electronics engineers working for the U.S. Navy as an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging. The term radar has since entered the English language as the common noun, radar, losing all of the capitalization. Radar was originally called by the term RDF (Range and Direction Finding) in the United Kingdom, using the same acronym as the one for Radio Direction Finding in order to conceal its ranging capability from unwanted listeners, such as foreign secret agents.. Also, in German, the word is Radar - simply because in German, all nouns are capitalized. In English, the word radar is also used as an adjective, as in radar antenna. The uses of radar include air traffic control, radar astronomy, air-defense systems, antimissile systems; nautical radars to locate landmarks and other ships; aircraft anticollision systems, ocean-surveillance systems, outer-space surveillance and rendezvous systems; meteorological precipitations, radar altimeters, earth-skimming flight-control systems, guided-missile target-locating systems, and ground-penetrating radars. Other systems similar to radar have been used in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as "lidar", which uses visible light from lasers, rather than radio waves. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why does my radar detector go off when I get near a school bus? Q. If I pass a school on the road, my radar detector starts to go crazy. Do they have some sort of radar emitting device specifically designed to make those with radar detectors go for their first instinct and slow down when it chirps? Or is it some sort of GPS (or something else) that they have, and having radar detectors go off is merely an attractive coincedence? Just wondering. Thanks. Police departments put old radar guns/ or now refered to as a radar drone. In school buses and in thes construction signs etc. To get detector users to slow down. Point being you get an alert you are more likely to slow down Answered by robm425 - Tue Sep 18 11:49:46 2007 How long would a radar signal take to complete a round-trip between Earth and Mars? Q. How long would a radar signal take to complete a round-trip between Earth and Mars when the two planets are 0.5 apart sorry 0.5 AU apart. How do you do this? Asked by shalala - Fri Feb 5 13:42:21 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. 0.5 AU would make it 1 AU roundtrip so it would take 8.2 minutes. Of course that only applies when Earth and Mars are lined up at 0.5 AU apart which is about a few days a year. Q. I live in st.louis area and i dont know what radar detector to get yet. I would consider the valentines but they too expensive. If anyone can suggest a radar detector for under 100 bucks that be good. Asked by snakeviper1000 - Mon Jul 26 05:15:34 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Cobra is probably your best bet for a budget brand. Since radar detectors/laser jammers are not illegal in non-commercial vehicles in Missouri, having something that is undetectable to VG2, etc. etc. will be of little-to-no use to you. I would suggest getting something that detects radar AND laser. I own a Cobra XRS9955, and I would suggest some of the lower end XRS series. They start cheap, but you get what you pay for with radar detectors so I would suggest spending $25-$40 over $100.
